‘If you’re going to do anything with food and drink you should do it in Melbourne’ – that’s exactly what the owner of Abacus says. This is their first Melbourne venture and their new Melbourne hotspot is something that can’t be missed.
An entrance like nothing you have seen before, in what was once the Westpac bank (hence the name Abacus) in the heart of South Yarra these guys have done an almighty job in transforming this into a mind-blowing modern café. This space was designed by Architects EAT. Tropical plants are scattered throughout the space give a laid-back vibe. While the large open kitchen with high ceilings, exposed natural timbers, and concrete interiors will have you staying through to dinner (did we mention they do dinner!!).
Teaming up with one of Melbourne’s best chefs and Chris Connolly (former Top Paddock) to create an all-day menu focusing on everything from the finest of seasonal produce. They make everything on site where possible – even making their own honey with their own bees! A wood fire oven takes the menu to the next level and it doesn’t just stop there – Abacus bakes its own bread, cure and smokes their own meats and mills their own flour!
The breakfast menu includes the usual suspects with a twist. If we would have it our way we would order everything!
If you have a sweet tooth you definitely can’t go past the ‘Sweet Ricotta Dumplings’ maple & ricotta stuffed dumplings, confit rhubarb, salted peanut, passionfruit & pear tea – it’s quite a surprise when it arrives.
On a savory note the ‘Cauliflower Heart slow-fried cauliflower steak, smoked eggplant, pickled fennel, saffron, cucumber, fried egg’
Or something in between and vegan ‘Hand-made Cornflakes abacus cornflakes, puffed grains, maple pistachio, banana, strawberry, pepper-mint, pumpkin & almond milk
If that’s not enough Abacus is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – they have also teamed up with St Ali to create their own coffee blend so we can promise you, your morning coffee will be good!
